We are back into to Glacier Bay National Park for the fall season
About this image: "Well, it IS sunny, above 10,000 feet that is..."
Mad Dog returned again to Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, to see what this incredible nature preserve had to offer in the colorful Autumn. We are expecting to capture many colorful photos to share. The evening we arrived in Bartlett Cove, it was a struggle between the sun and clouds. Every time the clouds converged in front of the sun, it would burn them up to reveal another short while of sunny weather. When we arrived in Bartlett Cove, it was relatively quiet but there still were a few other visiting boats.

About this image: A Tlingit Bark Carving on the Forest Loop trail
The next day in Bartlett Cove we decided to take a short walk. The struggle the evening before between the sun and the clouds was finally won by the sun as it was a beautiful, sunny warm end of August day. There are several well maintained walking trails located near Bartlett Cove. On one of the trails we saw this authentic Tlingit Bark Carving, created by the Tlingit in Alaska. The tree is still very much alive with this carving "tattooed" into it's bark.

Fungi on a tree in the forest by Bartlett Cove
About this image: The Living Rainforest of Glacier Bay
Glacier Bay has a unique weather system that somehow pours tons of rain on it during the year. Much of the area is classified as Rainforest and as one of the Park Rangers described it, "If you want a Rainforest... you need Rain". This photo was a little off the trail, but the way the sun reflected off of the collected water drops presented a nice visual canvas. The forests here are covered with moss, fungus and mushrooms due to the high and constant moisture levels.

Forest by Bartlett Cove
About this image: "Be careful in the woods, Red Riding Hood"
The woods near the trail by Bartlett Cove present an excellent means to explore the woods. Again, with so much moisture the woods are alive with trees growing in the fertile soil, to mosses and fungi growing on the trees. This stand of fresh water had a red tint to it due to the years and years of evergreen needles falling into it.
Fungi growing on a cut tree near Bartlett Cove
About this image: Fungi growing on a cut tree near Bartlett Cove
While the cut tree doesn't look very "natural" it did clear the way for a trail. You can see that the second growths in this forest (the fungi, mosses, etc) let nothing go to waste. Here that are making quick time of the cut tree establishing a new group of Fungi on the end and several mosses, ferns and lichens moving onto the rest of the stump.
Moss blankets the Forest Floor in Bartlett Cove
About this image: Moss blanketing the forest floor
A carpet of moss in this warm moist environment has taken over and is completely blanketing the forest floor near Bartlett Cove in Glacier Bay National Park. While this carpet looks soft and inviting, it is a definitely WET carpet and there are lots of sticks and poky things hiding beneath the unassuming exterior. This is one area that is nicer to look at and make a photo than it is to sit in it.
