The Mad Dog Galley

Cooking and preparing food on the sailboat Mad Dog Voyager, or any boat, presents their own challenges and hurdles. With limitations on storage, fridge & freezer space and the availability (or un-availability) of fresh foods creativity takes the forefront.

In contrast to this "limitation", anyone invited aboard and treated to a little entertainment and snacks or dinner will attest to the food on board the sailing vessel Mad Dog Voyager.

Creativity in the Galley includes using and preparing non-traditional foods and meals. We use a wide selection of dried, dehydrated, canned (usually limiting to low-salt and organic varieties) fresh and "wild" foods, along with a ever-increasing range of spices.

As much as possibly everything from homemade bread & crackers to soups, stews & chowders, to apple pie, cakes and desserts are made from scratch. Preparing foods from scratch allows us to incorporate a wider variety of foods while reducing the number of goods and variety of foodstuffs required on-board. As much as possible non-perishable goods, such as powdered goods, un-ground coffee, dried foods, beans, soybeans, etc., make up the majority of supplies on board. As mush as possible these foods are supplemented by fresh caught fish including Salmon, Halibut, Trout, Flounder, Rockfish, Seaweed, Crabs, etc.

Of course the occasional container of whipping cream or a really good barbequed steak make it into the Galley and on to the table!

A tribute to true heroes

Quote: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover"   - Mark Twain -
