The World is a Global Village
If we compared the world to a village with 100 inhabitants, taking
into account the diversities among the world, a one day snapshot of
this village would look as follows:
57 Asian, 21 Europeans, 14 Americans (North & South) and 8 African
52 Female & 48 Male
70 Non white-caucasian & 30 white-caucasian
70 Non-Christian & 30 Christian
89 Heterosexual & 11 Gay/Lesbian
6 people will hold 59% of the worlds total wealth
80 are homeless or without permanent shelter
70 are illiterate
50 are dependant on others
1 inhabitant will die
2 new inhabitants will be born
1 will have a computer
1 will have an advanced education diploma
When people view the world in this distilled, simplified version, it
is clear that understanding, acceptance and study is necessary.
If you awaken this morning and you are not terminally ill, you are
luckier than the 1 millon people that will die within the next few
days.
If you have never been in a war, never been lonely and alone, never
been hungry and have never experienced the suffering of the wounded,
you are luckier that 500 million people in the world.
If you can go to your place of worship without being threatened,
without being arrested and without being murdered for your religious
beliefs, you are luckier than 3 billion people in the world.
If you have food in the refrigerator, you are clothed, if you have a
roof over your head and a bed to sleep in, you are richer that 75%
of the rest of the world.
If your assets are greater than your debts, even if it is only by a
few dollars, you belong to the 8% of the richest people in the
world.
And today, by reading this, you are lucky because you can read, you
do have access to a computer and you are able to make choices &
decisions that could make a life-altering impact on the great
majority of the global village inhabitants that can neither choose
or make choices for themselves.
Somebody once said:
"Work, as if you don't need the money,
Dance, as if no one is looking,
Sing, as if no one is listening,
Smile, as if you've never been hurt,
Live, as if paradise is here on Earth"
