The power and throttle aboard the sailboat Mad Dog Voyager is usually
the wind. However on those occasions when the wind isn't co-operating,
or we just want to motor along, we start up the Yanmar diesel and rely
on the Teleflex TFX EC electronic throttle.
The Teleflex TFX EC throttle is an excellent means by which to control
the engagement of the forward or reverse gear and the throttle control
in a single lever unit. The Teleflex TFX EC is capable of being
controlled from three separate stations, however ours is set up for only
two stations, one at the inside steering station, the other in the
cockpit. By pushing the throttle forward, the forward gear is first
engaged by a microprocessor controlled servo drive cable to the Yanmar
Marine Gear. Once engaged a second servo driven cable control the
throttle on the Yanmar engine. The same occurs in reverse, however the
Yanmar Marine Gear will not change direction unless the RPM's are below
1,000 RPM. The Teleflex TFX EC throttle does not force the issue and
once the Marine Gear is able to switch direction it does so.
The Teleflex TFX can be configured to suit most anyone configuration.
Ours is set up so that control can be transferred from one station to
the other while underway. Additionally, the throttle ramp-up curve has
five selections to choose from. Either you can have a slow ramp up to
full throttle, you can have a straight ramp up, or three other settings
in between.
The onboard microprocessor stores any error states and these are
displayed via an LED screen. Error codes can include, low main battery,
low backup battery, lost data contact, error in a Control unit, etc. For
safety the Teleflex TFX EC throttle control is powered by two battery
sources, usually the starting battery and the house battery as a backup.
The Teleflex TFX EC electronic throttle control was manufactured in
Sweden by Teleflex and was chosen by CR Yachts as the throttle for our
400DS.
