Flexible shaft coupling by
Centaflex
Building a sailboat, or any boat for that matter, is a huge
undertaking. Even production boat facilities face daily
challenges ensuring everything is aligned perfectly to prolong
the working life of all onboard components. The CentaFlex
flexible shaft coupling provides a means to compensate for even
the slightest mis-alignment between our
Yanmar 4JH3E diesel
engine, the
propeller shaft and the cutlass bearings (the
water-tight seal where the propeller shaft passes through the
boats hull) on Mad Dog Voyager, our
CR400DS sailboat.
The thick, resilient rubber coupling is secured or bolted,
independently, to both the transmission output and the
propeller
shaft.
Not only does the Centaflex coupling protect against mis-alignment
wear, it also acts as a safety, protecting the engine and
transmission in case of serious impact or seizing of the
propeller. The strength of a length of 1/4" thick line (rope)
becomes apparent when it accidentally becomes wrapped and
entangled around the propeller shaft and instantly the propeller
stops turning. Rather than risking damage to our
Yanmar 4JH3E
diesel engine
or transmission gearing in this instant, the Centaflex becomes
the shear point, saving both the Yanmar and the cutlass bearing
from serious damage.
Like an insurance policy, we hope that we "never" need to put
the CentaFlex coupling to the test and we just keep smoothly
sailing along.
